Dear Members,

On behalf of the Organising Committee of the XXXIV National Conference of the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists, which will be held from 24th to 28th November in 2010(MICROCON 2010), I welcome you all to this old and historic city of Kolkata, which has already celebrated more than 300 years of its existence. Named by the British as Calcutta and founded by Job Charnock in 1690, over three villages on the bank of the Ganges viz Sutanuti, Gobindapur, and Kalikata as well as relatively built up area ‘Bazar’, it comprised of 5077 bighas or 1692 acres. Today it is one of the booming metropolis of our country. There are a number of historic places to visit in and around Kolkata: Kalighat and Dhaknineshwar temples, Belurmatt, Jorasakho, ansestral home of Vivekananda, Mother house, etc to name a few. From the lofty mountains of Darjeeling to the world famous mangrove forests of Sunderbans, including its elusive Royal Bengal tiger, Bengal has all the variety to attract the tourist's attention. The National Congress is being held in Kolkata after many years and hence we would like to make this congress, as very special one for you. The modern topics in the subject will be deliberated upon to make the participants aware about the recent trends in the field. Pre-conference CME and workshops are also being arranged to update the knowledge of the delegates. The theme of Microcon2010 is “Microbes – Its past, present and future”. We hope that you will participate in large numbers to make this program a grand success. This historic city of Kolkata is preparing to welcome you and we as organizers extend a very warm welcome to you.

Hoping to see you in November 2010.

With warm regards,

Kolkata, the city known for its rich cultural extravaganza, literature and heritage extends its hearty welcome to all the delegates of Microcon2010. Besides being an abode of great history of Indian literature it is also known as ‘Home away from home’ for all the tourists visiting here. The capital of West Bengal, situated on the bank of holy river Ganges is the most appropriate place where the contrast between the ancestral glory and heritage with the present modernization is well marked.
The sweetness in behaviour and the hospitality of Kolkattans is as famous as Kolkata Rosogollas. We welcome you all to explore the world of microbes in Tagore’s “Sonar Bangla”.

Dear All Members of Medical Microbiology fraternity,

After a long hiatus the West Bengal chapter of IAMM is going to host the National Conference of our association in November 2010.As the Organising Secretary of the conference I expect you to attend the conference in thousands not only for exchange of views & ideas of the old & the young working in the field of Medical Microbiology but also to visit Kolkata as the cultural hub of the nation & its surroundings.
Kolkata(or Calcutta) has given birth not only to the national cult figures but also to great scientists. Nobel Laureates like Rabindranath Tagore, Prof.C.V. Raman, Mother Teresa & Prof. Amartya Sen either was born or worked here. National hero- Subhas Chandra Bose, the great dancer-composer Uday Shankar, world famous sitarist Pandit Ravi Shankar, & noted film-maker Satyajit Ray were the gifts of Bengal to the nation.
Sir Ronald Ross, Prof.S.N.De & Dr. S. Mukherjee were pioneers in the field of Microbiology who worked here day & night to lead us to this day still we can boast.
In the month of November Kolkata has very fine weather, neither hot nor too cold. There are a few places in & around the city like Victoria Memorial Hall, Kali Temple of Kalighat & Dakshineswar, and Belur Math on the River Ganga, where you can enjoy the day with your family under the bright but soothing sun.
The largest delta of the world & the largest mangrove forest is in the Sundarbans which may be visited in two to three days’ time and even Shantiniketan, Gurudev Rabindranath¢s dream project is only a few hours¢ journey.
Let us assemble next November in Kolkata to sip from the good old past, look into the future & enjoy life & ambience of the place among our peers of the present.
